About the Project
Conquest Emergency Department, Hastings
Leading his first construction project from concept to completion, Kieran Legg showed exceptional customer focus. It was needed, for the scheme lay within a busy hospital emergency department operating 24/7, completely surrounded by live wards and with ambulances pulling up alongside the site entrance.Â
The 600mm-thick ground slab needed to be broken up so that new drainage could be installed. So Kieran brought in a demolition robot, covering it with an acoustic tent and lining the adjacent wall with acoustic blankets. When this wasn’t enough to suppress the noise sufficiently, he ditched the robot and cut the concrete up with a track saw before removing it from site for breaking. Â
The high-risk installation of medical vacuum and gas services to four new treatment spaces involved turning off the existing supply to six wards for up to six hours. The operation went entirely to Kieran’s efficient plan following his thorough discussions with the hospital’s experts. Â
He tightly managed the arrival of materials and equipment, as delivery vehicles had to use the same access route as the ambulances. Kieran made certain that ambulances were always given priority, with deliveries diverted if necessary to loop around the area and return. Â
The project was handed over on time, on budget and with zero defects. The customer was delighted and Kieran was formally promoted to construction manager.Â
