About the Project

Hampton by Hilton Hotel, Bath

After completing four projects for the client in six years on or ahead of schedule, Mark McCormick was the obvious choice for this fifth scheme. Yet no project is ever a repetition, with success dependent on overcoming a different set of challenges each time round. Scheme five, though, enjoyed the same success as the previous four, with the added extra of completion three months early.

This time round, Mark encountered uncertain and unique ground conditions. His careful coordination and sequencing charted a safe and efficient route through Bath’s natural hot springs, plus gas mains and a live substation.

There was no scope for value-engineering the facade or the internal fittings, because of planning and brand requirements respectively. Mark kept the project commercially viable by redesigning the basement development to fit within the footprint of the existing vault. The scope reduction, and the ability to reuse the existing basement structural walls, delivered the required savings – and more.

He solved the coordination issues generated by the scheme’s 27 different bedroom types on the digital drawing board. By building the project in 3D BIM software, he was able to prevent service and layout clashes.

And where decision-making on site was unavoidable, Mark’s creation of a fully finished mock-up guest bedroom and other benchmarks set the required quality levels. He enforced them through a rigorous inspection regime and meticulous quality management.
