Meet the Finalists
2025 | Healthcare

On this complicated healthcare project with numerous stakeholders and formidable logistics, trust was a golden key. Matt Keen’s possession of it opened the door to a build that exceeded the client’s expectations.
About the Project
UHBW GICU 2 Extension
His plan to construct a three-storey extension inside an existing atrium above a live emergency department that had to remain fully operational caused much shaking of user heads. By using point cloud surveys and 3D images so staff could visualise how they would operate during construction, Matt alleviated the fears and built confidence in the works.
He minimised the risk of dust migrating from the work areas to patient areas by installing full-height, fully fire-stopped partitions around the works, along with an extract system.
Once the project was on site, he liaised constantly with heads of departments, clinical leads, ambulance and air ambulance, emergency medicine, infection control, mortuary services and theatre managers to build trust while maintaining progress. By communicating clearly, meeting deadlines, collaborating with hospital staff on scope and timeline decisions, and being proactive in identifying potential conflicts and finding solutions, he kept everyone involved and onside.
And with handed-over areas of construction immediately going live in the hospital, Matt derisked the issue of defective work by demanding quality first, last and at all points between to deliver a snag-free scheme.
