Joshua Waterman MCIOBIntegrated Project Delivery LLP
Battersea Power Station - Phase Two
Restoration and redevelopment of grade II*-listed former power station, completed in 480 weeks.
Seconded to the client to deliver one of the UK’s biggest and most complex construction projects ever, Joshua Waterman has lived it, breathed it and been kept awake at nights by it for six years, from piling to handover. As one of the most junior members of the seven-strong senior team, he led from the front and performed well beyond his years.
About the Project
Joshua helped the project pivot away from a traditional design and build. In came a contract management company incentivised to reduce costs and programme – a move estimated to have saved £200m. He tamed a perilously surging budget by streamlining procurement and enforcing cost robustness.
Six months was saved by Joshua changing the structural frame from in-situ concrete to steel and metal deck. His rejection of a top-down build for one of the huge residential wings saved 20 weeks by allowing multiple work fronts. He led the charge for sectional completions, easing the construction pressure while allowing the developer to achieve its sales targets. And his buildability revision of the major landscaping packages saved £6m by standardising the curved stone steps in one area and introducing gradients in another.
But most of all, Joshua embraced a ‘leave your badges at the door’ integrated team approach as an opportunity to offer support everywhere and anywhere. It was his determination and commitment to doing whatever was required that drove this huge project to successful completion.
