2025 | Healthcare

There were an extraordinary number of visitors to this site during construction – a total of 2,000, descending three times a week. Wayne Fleet helped his client, which depends on charitable donations, to generate project income by welcoming in the public.
About the Project
St Catherine's Hospice
Donation-sensitive budget fluctuations drove the scheme. The suspension of fundraising activities during Covid forced an early design downsizing. By repositioning the plant room, and streamlining the bedroom wings, Wayne was able to maintain the number of bedrooms.
Likewise, client-led variations driven by donations success included the conversion of the top floor from storage to office space. Wayne astutely managed this even as the roof works were in progress.
His other interventions included using a composite roofing panel to accelerate watertightness. On a site that suffered from driving rain, he saw off programme risk by using a metal framing panel system so that internal works could be pushed forward when the externals were delayed. And his piled foundation allowed steel frame installation while ground beams went in elsewhere.
Wayne brought a determined, pragmatic, can-do approach that delivered completion on time and budget and to a high quality. His leadership delivered more than just a new build, helping to underpin the confidence of donors as well as client and end-users.
