About the Sustainability Award

Celebrating the cultural shift

The construction industry has started to take steps to become more sustainable by looking at new methods to cut down on waste as well as innovating new products that can help improve many facets of the building process.

Our industry has an important role to play in Sustainability, and it is our responsibility to recognise our contribution towards creating a fair and sustainable future for people no matter where they are.

The CIOB Sustainability Award, introduced to the CIOB Awards in 2022, celebrates those who have made their mark on sustainability within the built environment. Our winner will have demonstrated their understanding of sustainable development whilst taking an active role in supporting communities.

How to Enter

What you will need to complete your application or make a nomination

To enter, click ‘Enter Now’. Then, select the award that you would like to enter and fill in your details. Once submitted, you will receive an email which will contain a link to your CIOB Awards portal. The portal will contain the form for the award that you have selected to enter.

The award is open to all UK-based candidates working within the built environment.

The submitted evidence should be during the period from January – December 2023.

The Independent Testimonial must come from someone outside of the candidate’s organisation with direct knowledge or experience of working with the candidate.

You may nominate yourself for this award.

The submission deadline for this award is 30 September 2024.

What we’re looking for

Judges will be looking for:

  • Workplace evidence to demonstrate your direct involvement in best practice in any area of sustainable construction (for example, net zero buildings, whole life carbon, climate resilience, energy efficient retrofit, circular economy, sustainable land use, biodiversity net gain or nature-based solutions, water management, sustainable procurement, developing sustainability knowledge, sustainable connectivity and transportation, sustainable communities and social value, or good health and wellbeing, etc).

  • Use examples to demonstrate your understanding and experience of sustainable development and how you have implemented this in practice.

  • Please indicate how you stand out from the crowd, relating your contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (indicate which of the 17 goals you have contributed to through your work).

  • Your examples must demonstrate that you have gone beyond compliance and should be supported by relevant quantitative and/or qualitative data.

You may prepare your answers in advance and submit them at once after you register or work on them over time, making sure you save your progress every time you update the form.
