Meet the Finalists
2025 | Education

Brought in as project head six months after site start, Gareth Fallows inherited a scheme that was slipping and a client whose confidence was waning.
His introduction was transformational. He took a closely knit team that was engrossed in the project and got its members to think and work differently.
About the Project
Institute of Medical Sciences - University of Bolton
With the steel frame erection behind programme and design issues proliferating with the main roof, Gareth resequenced the works. He had the supply chain and consultants workshop the missing detailing for heads of walls and encasements with buildability front of mind.
He smartly used the downtime involved in working out the way forward by vacuum-excavating a gas main to avoid a much more expensive diversion alternative and redesigning the external drainage to minimise works. His programme review completed, he squeezed in substantial extra works requested by the client by advising the off-site production of the fitted furniture.
He changed the floor for the technically challenging lecture theatre – a curved tiered ceiling and multiple wall buildups – from timber to raised access. It was installed at a fraction of the cost and time of the timber solution.
A fine communicator even when the news wasn’t positive, Gareth never shirked from giving an honest assessment of progress. His customer focus and can-do problem-solving delivered the programme and the budget — and impressed the client even further.
