About the Project
Edmonton Green Housing Hub
On his first project as the construction manager, a proactive, positive and focused Tom Arkley achieved high customer satisfaction scores. He performance also helped win another project from a very happy client.
Once the strip-out and screed removal of the second storey of the building were complete, the problems emerged. Columns didn’t align, the concrete floor slabs had high levels of deviation and included zones of pot and beam, together with service clashes with finishes. Tom rapidly workshopped the solutions on site with the designers and supply chain.
Similarly, removing the existing windows for the new curtain walling revealed an unknown column-spanning steel beam. Tom, together with the structural engineer and the window contractor, collectively found the solution in replacing it with a new lintel.
To avoid disrupting other building users, in particular the library on the ground floor, he created a temporary works entrance through a window via scaffolding. And all the powerdowns and connections for the new rooftop plant were completed out of hours
Tom’s rigorous management of the thorny logistics of assembling the many pieces of plant arriving from different parts of Europe for the rooftop installation was impressive. Planning permission for the associated crane lift had to be agreed months in advance.
He also incorporated considerable change during the project, made a notable budget-saving contribution by reusing the raised-access flooring tiles, and delivered fine quality.
